Dr. Mark Messina |
|
Dr Mark Messina, PhD, MS is a nutritionist with a master's
degree in nutrition from the University of Michigan and a doctorate
in nutrition from Michigan State University. |
|

He was employed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI),
National Institutes of Health, in the US, where he identified research
needs in the area of diet and cancer prevention. He was responsible
for allocating funding for research into the effects of soyfoods on
cancer prevention. He also headed the NCI's Designer Foods Program,
which focused on developing foods high in phytochemicals with anticancer
activity for use in research. |

Dr Messina writes extensively on the health benefits
of soyfoods and on plant-based diets and has given more than 200 presentations
to consumers and professionals on these topics. He co-edits and writes
a regular column for The Soy Connection, a newsletter sent
quarterly to 100,000 dieticians. He organised and chaired five international
symposia on "The Role of Soy in the Prevention and Treatment
of Chronic Disease" . |

| He was the co-founder and first editor of Vegetarian
Nutrition: An International Journal. He is also a senior
editor of the international Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter.
He is co-author of The Vegetarian Way (Crown Books, 1996),
The Dieticians Guide to Vegetarian Diets: Issues and Applications
(Aspen Publishers, 1996), and The Simple Soybean and Your
Health (Avery Publishers, 1994). Dr Mesina is president of Nutrition
Matters, Inc, and an adjunct association professor of nutrition at
Loma Linda University, CA. |

Professor Suzanne C Ho's major research interests are
in nutrition and chronic diseases, women's health and ageing, particularly
osteoporosis. She has obtained a number of competitive research grants
from both local and overseas for the conduct of studies in these areas.
She has published more than 150 book chapters and scientific papers
in international refereed journals. |

Besides research, she has also devoted herself to the
development of the discipline of epidemiology and women's health in
Hong Kong. She serves as the Director of Postgraduate Programmes in
Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Director of Centre of Research
and Promotion of Women's Health of the Chinese University of Hong
Kong. |

Dr Ho's professional society involvements include the
founding member, past president, honorary secretary and vice-president
of the Hong Kong Epidemiological Association, and council member of
the Hong Kong Gerontology Association. She is also Fellow of the American
College of Epidemiology, Fellow of the American College of Nutrition
and a member of the International Association of Epidemiology, the
American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, and the North American
Menopause Society. |

Dr Ge Keyou is a specialist in nutrition. He studied
at Beijing Medical College, and Beijing Union Medical College, where
he earned a post-graduate degree on Nutrition Pathology, and was a
post-doctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston
and Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University, New York. |

Dr Ge was appointed a professor with the Institute of
Nutrition and Food Hygiene at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine
in Beijing in 1990. He has also held posts at the Department of Nutrition,
Institute of Health, Beijing, and between 1987-90 was Senior Officer,
Department of Food Policy and Nutrition, with the Food and Agriculture
Organisation of the United Nations. |

He has published in numerous respected journals, both
in China and overseas. Dr Ge is an office holder and member of a number
of professional societies and membership, among them Deputy President
of the Chinese Society for Student Nutrition Promotion; Chief of the
Expert Consultative Committee, Chinese Society for Student Nutrition
Promotion; Deputy Chief of the National Consultative Committee on
Food and Nutrition; member of the Standing Board, Chinese Society
of Food Sciences; President of the Chinese Nutrition Society; Member
of the Editorial Board, Acta Nutrimenta Sinica, China; Chairman, Community
Nutrition Committee, Chinese Nutrition Society; and was elected as
a council member of International Union of Nutrition Sciences in 2001. |
