Vitasoy Story
The Vitasoy story began 1940 with a big idea and a little bean.
The bean was soy - sometimes known as "the cow of China" - the
main source of protein for the Chinese people for over 3,000
years. The big idea - the brainchild of founder Dr. K. S. Lo
- was to take the cow of China and literally milk it.
And so VITASOY was born: a nutritious, high-protein soymilk
drink that was sold at an affordable price to the people of
Hong Kong at that time.
At first, VITASOY was delivered fresh door-to-door on bicycles,
and it had to be sold at once or it would spoil. Business grew
very slowly and when the war interrupted production in 1941,
sales were only about 1,000 bottles a day.
Relaunching VITASOY after the war, Dr. Lo began selling his
soya bean milk through retail outlets, bringing it within the
reach of a mass market. By 1950, sales had grown to such an
extent that a new factory had to be built in Aberdeen, Hong
Kong. In 1953 VITASOY was further improved by sterilization,
so it no longer needed refrigeration, and business boomed again.
By 1962, sales had again increased so much that another new
plant was opened in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong.
At this time, VITASOY had become a household name and one of
the leading suppliers of soymilk products in Hong Kong. Sales
boomed yet again in 1975 with the introduction of the new Tetra
Brik packaging, which together with UHT (Ultra Heat Treated)
processing, ensured that VITASOY products could be kept for
months with all of their flavour and quality intact.
At about the same time, an era of diversification began. VITA,
a new brand, was created as an offspring of VITASOY, and a range
of fruit juice drinks was launched. Other products such as lemon
tea and chrysanthemum tea soon followed.
By the late 1970's and early 80's, there was no looking back
as the Group pushed into overseas markets. Today, Vitasoy products
are readily available in over 30 overseas markets and continue
to gain new customers every year.
Now a listed company on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong with
plants located in mainland China, Hong Kong, Australia and the
U.S.A., Vitasoy International is a dynamic, international organization
setting new standards of quality and innovation wherever its
products are sold. |
